Mistakes to Avoid When Writing Your Content Strategy

77% of companies say they have a content marketing strategy, according to HubSpot. So, the idea is definitely catching on, but what do you think the percentage of quality content strategies would be? That might be a whole different story!

The best thing about social media strategizing is that there is no "one way" to do it. Strategizing and planning looks different for every brand and every social media manager. However, there are a few simple things that everyone should try to avoid when it comes to writing your content strategy!

1.) Not writing one

You need a content strategy! Consider a content strategy your daily coffee, you need it to stay energized, focused, and well, sane. Your Instagram is the same way. It needs a content strategy to be energized, consistent and put together! The time of "winging it" on socials is well past us and we are now in the age of knowing our social media platforms and audience, and having a strategy that aligns and connects them.

2.) Guessing

Even if pains me to say this, maybe all those research papers in school weren't for nothing? Researching and insights will be your best friends when it comes to creating and restructuring your strategy. When your account is new, it can be more difficult to stray away from guessing, but trust researching process! There are tons of resources for you to use. Always take the time to learn about your target audience, so you don't have to resort to the guessing game.

3.) Not being detailed enough

Your content strategy is the backbone of your social media and every detail can be a piece of the puzzle! If your strategy and goals aren't clear, it can be confusing for not only you, but your audience, too. The more clear and detailed your strategy is, the easier it will be to create content that connects with your audience.

4.) Assuming it's perfect

Nothing is perfect and you shouldn't expect your content strategy to be either. Even with research and knowledge, mistakes can happen, too! Sometimes, strategies or content just flops. Certainly, do not be afraid to have to change and adapt your strategy if it's not performing how you want it to. Now matter how much we research and learn, something won't end up exactly how we wanted it or might surprise you, and that's okay!

5.) Not including SMART goals

You might have the best strategy in the world, but without measurement, how would you know? SMART goals are goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-framed. Think of not only social media goals, but also goals from your entire brand. Your social media is an asset to your company, so it should help you achieve your business goals.
