Why Gossip Girl Would Have Been a Great Social Media Manager
It's fall so you know we are rewatching Gossip Girl to get into the season. We all know that Gossip Girl was such an amazing blogger, so much so that as I write this, of course, I write it in my Gossip Girl tone.
But, have we ever thought of Gossip Girl being a social media manager? We could see her now as a social media manager for luxury brands and personal brands of New York City and the Upper East Side.
Here's why we want to see a reboot for Gossip Girl, with a bit of a career shift...
On Top of News and Trends
Gossip Girl was on top of her stuff! She always was the first to have the news and publish accordingly, just like social media managers. She was constantly posting at the head of every trend and news story, and that's what made her to go-to place for information and entertainment. No one knows it all of course, but social media managers leverage tools to stay on top of trends, platform changes, and news to adapt accounts accordingly, as Gossip Girl did with her "tips" and information sources.
Powerful Brand Voice
Spoiler alert! Dan, the primary person behind Gossip Girl, didn't match the persona one bit. Then, in the end, we learn that multiple different people, including Serena and Georgina, also take over as Gossip Girl before returning to Dan. Yet, the brand voice was so strong that anyone could adapt to it. We never saw that different people were behind the account, let alone that it was created by a teenage boy. As a social media manager, it's important to adapt to each brand's unique brand voice to carry out a brand persona, and that's exactly what we see from Gossip Girl.
Queen of Hooks
Gossip Girl was the queen of hooks. For years, the Gossip Girl blog and text blasts have pulled people in with powerful hooks and headlines. Think about it, she cleverly created hooks that made high school / college-aged students read more. Despite it being about people they knew, they could have easily ignored it, but they kept following in on Gossip Girl over the show. A good social media manager does exactly that. Hooks people in, and keeps their attention with carefully curated copywriting.
Knew the audience and What They Wanted to Hear
Throughout the seasons, Gossip Girl filtered out information left and right. She didn't turn every tip into a post. Not for the sake of anyone's feelings, but because she knew exactly what people wanted to hear. And, that's what every great marketer does! Social media managers are the gateway between a brand and their audience, and we are the ones who have to deliver strategized content that the audience will care about and engage with.
In conclusion, Gossip Girl needs to be revived as a social media manager! We think she could give Emily in Paris a run for her money because of the way Gossip Girls stays on top of pop culture, creates a brand persona, powerful copywriting, and leads with audience-focused content. Who's with us?
