What To Do When A Social Media Platform Has a Glitch

Glitches on social media platforms are...well, a word that rhymes with 'glitch' but we are a PG-13 company 😅

Social media apps often experience bugs or glitches, especially when they are updating. Not to name any names but if you are a frequent Meta platform user, you probably know exactly what we are talking about! There was an entire day in 2021 where it was just kind of...gone. And, let's not forget the 2022 Halloween bug where our accounts were suspended, our followers were gone, and social media managers got the true spooky Halloween experience!

So, the next time this happens, instead of sitting in sheer panic, here are some actions to take:

  1. Ask your network & the news to find out if more people are having this issue. You'll want to know if it's only you experiencing an issue, or if it's a more widespread problem, so you know what actions to take.

  2. Ensure that your app is up-to-date. Sometimes it's as simple as updating your app! Regardless, it's best to ensure that your app is updated when new changes, updates, and bugs pop-up so it doesn't cause even more issues.

  3. Turn your notifications on for the platform's main communication line where they release updates. For example, when Instagram had a bug on Halloween, they used their Communications Twitter account to communicate with users experiencing issues within their app. Be sure to check other platforms, their website, within the app, and/or their email list.

  4. Don't make any sudden changes, like deleting your app, logging out, or changing your password - unless suggested by the platform. It can make things much more complicated to get back into your account when the time comes!

  5. Stay patient! When our jobs rely on a platform, patient is the last thing we want to be. However, if many users are experiencing the same issues, submitting 50 help tickets for your account won't do much. Remain calm, wait for updates, and connect with your audience in a different way until they get back up and running.

  6. Don't put all your eggs in one basket! Platform glitches remind us that we are so much more than a one-platform wonder. We need to craft a well-rounded company and marketing plan to utilize and even fall back on in times like these.
