What To Do About a Potential U.S. TikTok Ban
Today, the Supreme Court will begin arguments over the ban, before the law goes into place on January 19th, 2025.
As marketers, our job relies heavily on social media platforms. And, without TikTok we would definitely have to make some shifts in our marketing strategies and our client's marketing strategies to fill this gap.
While this decision is ultimately uncertain, there are steps we can take to navigate through this weird time. Here's our advice for what to do in the meantime.
Don't make any huge investments or decisions
Diving in or backing out now is not the best move! We recommend continuing as usual until the final decision has been made. The last thing we want to do is put all our eggs into our TikTok basket, only to find out it's banned, or to hop off of the platform completely, only to restart it all over again if it is not banned. Don't make any huge decisions until we hear more details come to light!
Cross Post
While cross-posting isn't always the best strategy, cross-posting your video content on other platforms during this time could help. Post your TikTok videos as Reels on Instagram and Facebook, or Idea Pins on Pinterest, especially if it's timely or seasonal content, to ensure you don't have to worry about the piece of content not getting the traction it deserves.
Back-Up Your Content
Download and save! Make sure you are saving your content to your device to have an extra copy. It's unlikely that anything will happen suddenly, but just in case it can be great to have a backup of all your content as a reference point, or to post on other platforms. The last thing you want to do is completely lose all that content that you worked so hard on!
Pull Your TikTok Audience Into Other Channels
Make sure you are taking a well-rounded approach to your social media channels during this time, and posting across the most important ones to your audience. Find creative ways for your TikTok audience to follow you on other platforms as a just in case! We never want to solely rely on one platform, so it's always good to pull your audience to all your channels and offer a unique experience for them on each.
Your Email List
Every time a platform has a glitch or is down, you'll hear "This is why you need an email list." And while yes, we are sick of hearing it too, we can't help but preach it here. Push people toward your email list! This is a great way to get your leads into your sequences and keep them on your radar, no matter what platform they originally came from. Not to mention, email marketing has a high ROI of $44 for every $1 spent. Create an incentive for joining, or a fun opt-in to get them on your list and glued to it from there!
Remember that we all in the same boat with this, so talk to your community during this time. With all the changes in platforms and tools, there is stress that comes with it, but you are not alone! Join our Facebook group for social media managers if you haven't already and let's chat through this some more!
