How Do I Make My Content Go Viral?

Is it safe to say the new 'American Dream' is to go viral on TikTok or Instagram Reels? 😅

Pretty much anytime someone mentions working in social media marketing, the question of "How do I go viral?" almost always pops up. I mean, who doesn't want their content to be shared and loved by a variety of people? Viral content can really put your brand on the map. The more eyes on your content, the more possibilities for profile visits, followers, and overall engagement with your account. But, we are here to uncover the real truth about going viral on social platforms!

What does it mean to "Go Viral?"

First, what does "Going Viral" mean? Going viral essentially means that your content is being widely shared across a social platform and has an increased amount of reach and impressions because of this. This can be a video, a post, or even audio now with the help of TikTok and IG Reels. Whether they send, save, share, use, retweet, or tag friends - it all increases the number of impressions your post gets and gets the content into the sweet spot of the algorithm.

How do we make viral content?

Now that we know what it is, how do we make it happen? To put it quite bluntly: there is no secret formula to creating viral content and there are also no guarantees that your content will go viral. We cannot control what goes viral, but we can control the value of the content we create and set goals for the content to make it resonate with your audience enough for them to spread the word about it. Here at Social Savvy, we use a term in place of "viral content" called shareable content. This term is a more realistic way to categorize, considering that you can never guarantee a post to go viral, but there certainly is such a thing as making a piece of content with the goal of it being shareable. So, long story short, create content that is relatable and valuable to your target audience and include an effective CTA that promotes sharing, saving, and sending.

What types of content is shareable?

This will be different for every audience! Make sure to take the time to do your research on your audience when strategizing. Additionally, definitely check out your insights and see which of your posts have the highest engagement, reach, save, and send rates and consider repurposing those! Here are some other examples that might work as a shareable content piece for you as well:

  • Checklists

  • Quotes

  • Graphs

  • Carousel Posts

  • Infographic Style Graphics
