We Asked Our Network of SMMs: "What's One Tip You'd Give To Someone New To Being In Social Media Management?"

With conflicting advice, "hacks" in every direction, and the "one size fits all" advice mindset, starting out in the social media industry can be overwhelming! Social media is one of the most unique industries because we use it in our everyday lives on a personal level. However, it's a lot more complex on the professional side!

We asked our network of social media management experts inside our Social Savvy Collective Facebook Group, "What's one tip you would give to someone new to the social media industry?" and here's what they said:

“If I were starting a new social media account/becoming a social media manager, I would focus on reel content the most in the start to build up an audience in combination with engagement! I’d love to share more on this topic and the importance of reels and what makes a good reel in the blog.”

“Learn about and try different platforms to see which fit your need and what they’re good for.”

“Experiment! Play with elements in Canva, make custom reels, try to copy things you find cool... Look for resources. Stock photos, videos, free Canva templates, AI copywriting tools, good colour schemes... You can find something new every day.”

“Niche down and be known for something! I became a Pinterest expert & it made it so much easier to find clients & get booked out.”

“Be authentic, know and honor your truth. Work on yourself. Give back to others. Don't only follow trends, providing value and having long-term strategies are important. Know the meta guidelines, especially when you're doing ads. Create multiple ad accounts as soon as you can, in case one of them gets banned. Use double-factor authentication! And secure the login codes in a safe place - oh and of course: use a password manager.”

Jessica Sheehy

Social Media Strategist, Founder

@socialsavvyhq & @socialsavvycollective

“Start with what you love doing! The key to any successful service-based business is a network of clients who are satisfied with your work (they’ll start referring you, and you’ll scale your business in record time). But the only way you can do this is by starting with the platforms you love to manage and create content for. The business building strategies will follow, but start with your social media craft to land your first few clients.”
