What We Can Learn From Taylor Swift to Help Us Market Our Business Better

Even the truest TSwift fans might not know this but... Taylor is a huge content marketer and she's made many marketing moves all by herself.

Not only is Taylor Swift the literal queen of everything when it comes to the music industry, but I think we can safely say she takes the crown when it comes to marketing, too.

If you're following her new album launch, iykyk. This is such a perfect example of her marketing, but this nowhere near covers how many strategic marketing moves she made over the years. Even if you aren't a swiftie, you can't deny her credible marketing and branding skills. Let's take a closer look!

What we can learn from Taylor Swift to help us market our own business better.

What Can We Take From Taylor Swift's Marketing?

Social Media Is Powerful

We are still not so patiently waiting for Taylor to be coined with inventing social media marketing, considering she basically started using social media as a major marketing and connection tool back in 2005!

Where are all our MySpace users at? Just kidding, let's not age ourselves here 👀 But for years, Taylor used her Myspace blog to share exclusive content and connect with her fans, and it only went up from there! Now, she's in the top 10 most followed users on Twitter, 227 million Instagram followers, and over 14 million TikTok followers. Since she was able to build a solid social following and network, that she now uses for launches, feedback, buzz, connection, and so much more. Never underestimate the power of socials!

Storytelling is a Huge Must

We LOVE storytelling in marketing! It's attention-grabbing, relatable, and memorable. And Taylor definitely knows this, too! Her music, her music videos, her launch clues, and her content all include strategic storylines. She's able to tell a story with her fans in the most creative ways and it further establishes her relatability.

Make sure you're utilizing storytelling in your business' marketing!

Sometimes a Rebrand is Necessary

Not only did she pull off one of the biggest rebranding campaigns for an artist of all time when she made the switch from country to pop, but she also has rebranded a few more times since then, including completely wiping her social media accounts clean and starting over. And honestly, she pulled them all off seamlessly! So, don't be afraid to take the leap when it comes to a rebrand.

Repurpose Content

Taylor's version? Sounds like the best repurposing campaign to me (not to mention she finally gets to own her own work!). Taylor Swift originally signed with Big Machine Records and recorded six albums with them. And, in the music industry, the record company typically owns the rights to the masters recorded. So, in the last few years, she's been rerecording and releasing her albums (2 down!) with the phrase "(Taylor's Verison)" added to the title so fans know that it's owned by her. Even though these are songs we've heard before, they are POPPING-OFF. We are with TSwift, big time here - repurpose, repurpose, repurpose!

Social Listening Is Key

Taylor is so in tune with her audience (pun fully intended)! Social listening is, "tracking social media platforms for mentions and conversations related to your brand, then analyzing them for insights to discover opportunities to act." You might remember her #Taylurking tweet or her "secret sessions" (hand-picked fan groups where she shares exclusive content), as just a few of the many examples of her social listening. She fully utilizes feedback and conversations from her fans about her brand to her advantage and turns them back into campaigns, strategies, and topics. Let's all follow her lead and follow the conversations around our brands to bring better content, better products/service updates, and better ideas to the table for our customers.

How To Pull Off A Successful Launch

There is not a single album or single drop that hasn't been strategized, suspenseful, and BIG. She goes all in when it comes to building a launch that feels fun and not at all like a sales tactic. With her well-throughout clues, she creates a mystery feel that makes fans really dive into the research to put the puzzle pieces together and create some serious buzz around the whole launch. We aren't saying you have to go all murder mystery when it comes to your business launches, but put some serious time and strategy into creating something that resonates with our potential buyers!

Being Real & Genuine Goes A Long Way

Never underestimate the power of being real and genuine in business, Taylor surely doesn't! She has tons of fans, right? Yet, she still connects with fans on such a personal level that it makes them feel like she's talking directly to them.

Not to mention, Taylor speaks out about all kinds of social issues, trending topics, and topics she cares about. She's not afraid to spill the tea, and this comes off as extremely real and genuine to her followers, further establishing the trust and connection we all want in our communities! Marketing is becoming more genuine and real by the day, so we are following Tay on this one, too.

Branding is Important

When we think of Taylor Swift, there's probably a lot that comes to mind. That is all thanks to her branding! We purposely put this as the last point because all of the above-mentioned points are a huge part of creating the brand she has today. She has created this whole persona through her branding that goes beyond the music, and tugs on the emotions of love & heartbreak that we can all relate to. Make sure you are doing all that you can to create your powerful brand!
