What To Do When a Potential Social Media Management Client Ghosts You

It's not even Halloween, but the ghosts are OUT πŸ‘€

We hope you haven't experienced a ghosting potential client in your social media management freelancing business, but if you have, we feel your pain. "Ghosting" is when communication with someone ends without any explanation. Ghosting happens in every industry, there's no doubt. People won't show up for interviews, potential customers won't return calls, it's inevitable in life! But, that certainly doesn't mean that it it isn't frustrating when it does happen.

Let us just say, 90% of the time when it comes to clients ghosting, it has nothing to do with you. Let me say that again, it has nothing to do with you. Clients can ghost for all sorts of reasons - timing, budget, forgetfulness, other things pop-up. Rarely, is it something that we can change if it's a factor they are personally facing. So, don't let the ghosting dip your confidence.

Here are tips for how to handle a ghosting social media management client:

Tips for Dealing with Client’s that Ghost you:

  1. Give them the benefit of the doubt

  2. Life happens, right? There can be all kinds of reasons that people take a while to answer, or even ghost for a while, too.

  3. Keep a positive mindset

  4. It's not you, it's them! Staying positive is key in social media management. Don't take ghosting personally if you did everything in your power to make the client relationship happen.

  5. Follow-up with them

  6. Following up is key with potential clients. Of course, we don't want to go all stalker mode and send them 10 follow-ups, but 2-3 is perfectly okay! This is where having a lead generation follow-up process can be effective.

  7. Define closure yourself

  8. You may not get closure from them, but you can end it yourself! A "Keep me in mind for the future!" email is the perfect way to gain some closure for yourself and let them know that you won't be continuing.

  9. Try a different channel.

  10. We've all been the owners of a crazy inbox from time to time! If you emailed them but know that they originally contacted you through DM, try a DM next time.

  11. Review your process

  12. While the reason they are ghosting might not be on you specifically, this can be a good time to learn and refine your processes as an extra measure. One of the ways we like to filter out unserious clients is in our discovery questionnaire.

You can't control clients ghosting you, but you can control how you handle yourself in the situation! Try these tips, keep your head up and remember that this happens!
