How to Stay Social On The Road
Summer road trip anyone?
With the light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic and the lust for #VanLife, traveling is finally something we are all thinking about again! Whether you're considering travel blogging or you're ready to start a new road trip, here are some top tips to managing social media on the road!
1.) Strategize Before You Leave!
Your content strategy will look a bit different, that's for sure; but, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't have one, in fact, it might be even more necessary for this situation! Most of the basics will be the same: who's your audience, you are your competitors, etc. While traveling adds in a bit of an unknown, spontaneous element - you will need to have an idea in your mind about the type of content you want to create. Plus, the last thing you want to do is get to your travel destination and experience burnout. Create a strategy for your socials that prioritizes convenience - whether that's templates, content pillars, or topic ideas!
2.) Create a phone tool kit
Our tools save us on the daily as SMMs, so on the road it's no different! You might not always have the access from your laptop or iPad on the road, so be sure to create a tool kit for yourself right on your phone! This can include your content creation, scheduling, and/or hashtag apps, maybe a photo editor and a project management tool. Which ever tools are your most-used faves, there are probably apps for them and even if you don't feel like you need it now, it might be helpful to have somewhere down the road!
3.) Privacy & Safety
While you're on the road, remember that you can't comprise your safety for content! Even though social media is such a fun platform, it can also be dangerous. When you're traveling, your credit card company knows that you're hopping around to different states and places, so it's easy for financial theft to occur. Not to mention that you probably are frequently sharing your location, can be traveling alone, visiting less popular areas, and are sharing that you are away from your home. These might not seem like a huge deal, but to a bad person these can all be pieces of the puzzle for them to put together. Try following these methods instead:
Keep a close eye on your banking transactions.
Notify your bank specifically where you are traveling too.
Save your photos and thoughts for when you have returned back home or until you have left the area, then post.
Don't publically share your future routes or dates.
Avoid taking photos of your boarding pass, license plate, passport, or driver's license information.
Discuss this with others you are traveling with, so they are also aware of the issues that can occur.
4.) Have Fun & Prioritize Yourself
Creating content can take a back seat when it comes to having FUN! Don't spend your whole trip and experience worrying about your socials. People can tell when you're being organic and having fun - and THAT'S why they want to follow! So, keep in mind that your social media can be apart of your journey, but let that be the main focus!
