How To Get Reels Content From Social Media Management Clients

Between TikTok videos, Instagram and Facebook Reels, and Pinterest Idea Pins, video content is needed now more than ever.

Video has emerged as a dominant force in the social media industry. But why is video content so important for social media? Video content stands out as a powerful tool for engagement, storytelling, and community. Brands can connect with their audience on a deeper level, build trust, and drive meaningful results by using videos. It’s crucial for brands to integrate video content into their social media strategy to stay ahead of the curve and achieve long-term success.

However, as freelancing social media managers, there is an added challenge that comes with our role. We aren't always present with our clients to film content. That means that we have to get a little creative when it comes to getting video content from clients, don't worry, we have you covered with our top tips on getting video content from social media management clients!

Set Expectations From The Start

In your discovery and onboarding process, have open conversations about content with your clients. You need content in order to do your job! If they don't have video assets or aren't willing to assist in filming these, this might not be a client you can work with in the long run!

Start the conversation of their comfortability with being in content, their current assets, and even plan for a content day from the start if that's something they need + have the current budget for, your future self will thank you!

Provide Guidelines

We like to use Loom + Google Sheets for this! For clients who are comfortable filming by themselves, we like to provide guidelines for them to assist them with getting high-quality content that meets both of our visions. This can also be a great way to connect on content ideas and ensure that you're following the brand's strategy and brand pillars throughout the content. A loom can be helpful for explaining the shot set up, and we use Google Sheets to get specific on content pieces.

Here's an example of how we like to lay out the Google Sheet! We like to include the shooting location (where you'd like them to film), any outfit expectations, content notes or title, the style of video you're looking for, who's in the shot, any props or certain products, inspiration or audio link, any additional feedback.

Creatively Edit

Getting creative with the editing process is essential! Client content might always be designed for TikToks or Reels, but we can always adapt content to it if the assets are there. Repurpose YouTube videos, podcast episodes, and even snapshots together to create something new specifically for socials.

Set Due Dates

Who runs the world? Due dates, babe! Work out a due date with your client on content assets. This not only make it actionable and puts it on the calendar, but it can help you plan for future content, too.

Work with a Content Creator or Hold a Content Day

If you or your client isn't comfortable with this process, a great option can be to (1) either work with a content creator local to them and white label their services, or (2) hold a content day yourself if you offer this service.

If you are holding a content day, be sure to download our content day template and content day shot list!

We hope you enjoyed these tips! You can efficiently gather and create compelling Reels, TikToks, and other video content that aligns with your client's brand and goals.
