Why Email Marketing Is Important For Any Business + How to Get Started

We don’t own our social media followers, and at any given time Instagram or Facebook could shut down. Do you have a way of reaching your customers?

The time to start an email list for your business is now!

Email marketing has an ROI of $44 for every $1 spent. If you think email is dead guess again. Campaign Monitor also concluded that more than 50% of users prefer to get updates from the businesses they follow through email.

How to get started with email marketing:

Choose a provider.

My email marketing provider of choice is Flodesk. If you are looking for a free version, MailChimp is a great platform to start with. But if you are wanting to get serious with your email marketing efforts and easily design on-brand interactive emails, then Flodesk is for you too. Create your email list.

The next step is to set up the “segment” of your email list. It is best to name it either customers or leads depending on the types of emails you are sending and to who, thus the segment. If you plan on creating multiple email list opt-ins (see below) then you can name your segment after that!

Create a signup form, pop-up, or landing page.

Flodesk allows you to create branded sign up forms, pop-ups, and landing pages for your list. All you have to do is select the type of sign up you are looking for, connect it to your segment, and design it.

Always capture the name of your subscriber on your form so you can personalize the emails. It is also great to include the frequency of emails you will send and don’t forget to include what the opt-in is!

Create an opt-in.

Gone are the days of “join my email list!” and people sign up for them. An email address is personal to your customers, and they are not just going to give it away for free. You want to entice them to sign up with either a promo code for shopping, a freebie which is typically a PDF, or a training series sent over the course of a few days via daily emails.

Create a workflow to send automated emails once someone subscribes.

The final step is to create a workflow, otherwise known as a welcome sequence, that automatically sends an email to new subscribers added to your list. You can set up multiple emails to go to this new subscriber over the course of a week or month to warm them up to your business and offer.

Nurture your list regularly.

Don’t forget to regularly send emails to your list! You can send exclusive content to your list every week: mini trainings, sales, promos, updates, and new blog content. You can set the frequency to be whatever suits you and your list, but be consistent about it.
