The Do's & Don't's of Running a Giveaway on Instagram

Yes, you can catch me entering in every IG giveaway that pops up on my newsfeed πŸ’… Have I ever won one? No. Will I continue to enter? Yes, probably.

Let's chat about how we can run our own! As social media managers and business owners, giveaways can be a great way to reward our followers and get new people to try out our product or service.

Check out this list of do's and don't's of running an Instagram giveaway:

How To Run a Giveaway on Instagram:

  1. Set goals: What do you want to come out of this giveaway? Reach, brand awareness, community building? Get specific on what you're looking for and set KPIs that reflect that!

  2. Clearly define the rules: Be sure to clearly state the rules of the giveaway in your post or in a separate post or landing page. This should include details such as the entry requirements, deadline, and prize(s).

  3. Pick a winner fairly and transparently: Use a random number generator or another impartial method to select the winner, and be sure to announce the winner publicly.

  4. Choose a valuable prize: What's something that's valuable to your audience? We want to think about their needs and provide something that can be a gateway into a loyal community member! Strategy hour? Free product? Get creative!

The Don't's of Running a Giveaway On Instagram:

  1. Do it just for followers: Chances are if your main goal is just followers, you'll likely attract the wrong type of audience. We don't want someone that's looking for another giveaway to enter, we want someone who will stick around and become a part of the amazing community, or is always a part of it!

  2. Use misleading language: Avoid using language that could be perceived as misleading or deceptive, such as "you have won" before a winner has been selected.

  3. Ignore Instagram's guidelines: Instagram has strict giveaway guidelines. Make sure to review and follow Instagram's promotion guidelines to avoid potential account suspension or other penalties.

  4. Overcomplicate the rules: Keep the entry requirements simple and easy to follow to encourage participation and avoid confusion!
