#WhatInTheWorldAreBannedHashtags???

While you're hashtagging your day away, be sure you are aware of banned hashtags! Banned hashtags are specific tags that will essentially hide your post from your audience when used. These hashtags don't necessarily have to be "bad" words or inappropriate, it can be basic words or phrases that Instagram has noticed trends with when it comes to spam and inappropriate content. Instagram uses these hashtags to minimize spam accounts and inappropriate posts shown, so real users can have a better experience on the platform. We created a list of frequently asked questions when it comes to banned hashtags help guide you through the subject.

Does it delete my post or account?

Not exactly. The post won't be deleted, it will be hidden from your audiences' newsfeeds. Your account won't be deleted if you use one banned hashtag on accident. However, if you continue to use banned hashtags, your account could get flagged, shadow banned, or removed.

How do they hide it from your audience?

In order for the users to see the post they would have to go to your profile, find a repost in Instagram stories, or search for the banned hashtag and see it in the results. Otherwise, it won't be shown on their newsfeeds as a post normally would.

Aren't they just inappropriate words?

NOPE! I think that's the most annoying part...some of them are just simple, innocent word(s)! For example, #besties, #boho, #adulting, #always, #dm, #hardworkpaysoff, #valentinesday #killingit, and #newyearsday are all banned hashtags.

How do I know which hashtags are banned?

If you search the hashtag and the message says something along the lines of "the posts are hidden because it doesn't follow Instagram's community guidelines," it's a banned tag. Additionally, there are tons of articles and creators talking about which hashtags to steer clear of, so be sure you're listening in on the conversation! You can also use a hashtag system that checks for banned hashtags for you, such as MetaHashtags.

Do they update which ones are banned?

Yes, Instagram does update the banned hashtags. Make sure you frequently check the hashtags you're using and follow a strategy when it comes to hashtags! This doesn't mean using the same hashtags on every post (that can get you flagged as spammer, too!) it just means that you can use a variety, but make sure you do your research before posting them.

What do I do if I used a banned hashtag?

You can always check on your account status by going to "settings," "account," and "account status," to see if you have violated any guidelines. If you have, Instagram might will show you the next steps the take. In case they don't, you can always remove the hashtag and/or post and mark it down for future reference.
